Intel - Top Tier Higher Price Best Performance
AMD - Middle Tier Cheaper Prices Depends on your budget...the sales going on at the time...and how motivated you are on hunting for the items.

We need to know how much you are willing to spend on CPU/motherboard/Memory, that will tell the story right there. If the budget is somewhat unlimited, I would go with the Intel I7 920.
Actually, right now since the release of the I5, AMD is no competition. The I5 is the same price as the 965 Phenom II, the best CPU AMD has to offer and the I5 is as good if not better. So, if you have a budget, go I5. If no budget, go with a socket 1366 I7 cpu. If you have a low budget, like $300 or less to get CPU/mobo/ram than you'll be needing to go AMD. Yo ucan get an Athlon II quad core, decent mobo, and RAM for under $300. But honestly, even any Dual core setup from AMD or Intel would crush the pentium 4 you have now.

Well, it depends on how you look at it. You can get a 955 for 175 bucks and a good Gigabyte 770 AM3 board for 75 bucks. Not a bad deal for 250 bucks. I'm still finding the i5 750, not that good of a deal if you consider throwing in the Phenom II 925/945 and 955. People get to wrapped up comparing it to the 965.

Haha, how true.
It really depends on if the OP finally posts what his budget is. Thats most of the determining factor.

An i7 computer can add up to £800 an AMD Phenom II dual core can add upto £300and the Phenom II Dual cores can run any game ultra smooth at the mo. graphics cards are what makes or breakes a computer any new CPU from intel or AMD is overkill.

Well he didn't say gaming he said multitasking, in which case he'd want atleast a quad. I was basing $400 off going with the 955 quad.

I just wanted to hear opinions from everyone. I figure out by looking what my budget should be I just want to see what everyone has to say and then look at it myself and determine what would be good. I have an AMD but that's even slower than this computer and older, and less ram.
It's good homework for me and good learning listening to all your thoughts on the two.
