cool

back on topic. i think it depends on the car, if it's main setup is for drifting it'll go round corners faster. well, judging by this vid it's pretty fast.

as for me, i'm not huge on drifting. it's cool to watch though.

On a track, or road, or anything tarmac, it's always quicker to drive up to the point of losing grip, and not going over it. Tyres are designed to work in one way. You'll no doubt see rally drivers spend half their time sideways, but that's because there is bugger all lateral(? that the right one? Hangover) grip on gravel, snow, whatever.

Exacly. I drive competition rc cars, and drifting actually makes you slower.
this goes for both on and off-road cars.
It might be a good way to turn faster (to prevent the car from hitting another car that spun out or so.) but the traction/speed out of a corner that way sucks.

Also, if you're drifting, you melt the rubber of the tyre on a real car, this makes it also very slippery, and actually you lose more traction. (Look at it as a burnout, without a burnout, you would've been a lot faster. )

from my experiences its fun to keep to drift, you keep momentum going and dont have to slow down. but it also seems like if you've got good torque then it would be just as fast to slow to and hug corners and launch when you straighten out

Drifters drirt also because they have locked differentials. Locking your diff makes you lost traction on 1 or both wheels anyways, so put on extra power then, and the back will step out.

iirc, drifting was invented as a technicue to escape nasty situations during a race. and since it looked cool, it began to get more and more fans.
But its by all means not the fastest way around a corner.
(think about it, if drifting was the fastest, why arnt F1 cars drifting around? definately not to save tyres.)
The only place where going sideways would be faster is in rally, aka, really low traction corners like on gravel. (think about the scandinavian flick for example.)
But in this situations its only faster, because you have really low traction already, and because the cars have 4wd.

correct me if i am wrong, but dont they have locked differentials, because they welded them to drift? in other words, they locked their differentials to drift... rather then drifting because it was locked?

umm, burnouts make the tire melty and sticky and they get a LOT better traction, why do you think at drag races they always do a burnout before going?

It's to a point though, yeah they get sticky but keep doing it and it starts to loose traction. "fade" is the term they call it.
