Default Drifting

Ok, I am wanting real answers to this.

I've seen a lot of people drift, in real life and in games. And from what I've seen so far it seems like drifting slows you down. I suspect that there are races where your required to drift (eg drift races, penalties for not drifting). But in the end it would seem to me that maximizing grip makes you go faster and wear the car less, which would mean a greater chance for a win.

I think its cool to watch a good drift though, but I cant (and wont) do it in my car. I've had friends that circle track race and thats how they turn in the corners.

So what do ya say? Is drifting really a faster way to take a turn?

I am not a race car driver, but from a physics stand point, the car is still traveling in the same direction from inertia, and the drift is friction from the tires sliding along the ground to change direction.

It is most likely just a really efficient way to turn or take a corner as when you are going really fast, inertia is a bitch so to speak.

Other than that, I got nothing.

In a sense....the car will be pointed straighter at the exit of a corner when drifting, however it will eat through tires faster.

Most of the time you see stuff about it because it "looks cool", but under most circumstances I'd say it's probably about as fast to hug the corners and all. There are some times, though, when drifting would give you a better exit.

And I've never really drifted seeing as neither of my cars are really driftable (Jeep Cherokee and Hyndai Sonata ) but I have taken the Jeep and slid around a parking lot. It is a blast to do

+1

Drifting can at times prevent you from sliding out of control if your going to fast, or on some harsh corners drifting it is faster, since you'd have to slow down too much to just maneuver the corners. Most of all though, it's extremely fun

Exactly

AS speedy said sometimes drifting is required just to stay on the track.

I'd imagine he's got experience at the WRC They don't move even if a car faceplants them!

Drifting your car is only good if you are doing it for competition. You have to have a spare set of tires for it because drifting causes your tires to spin really fast in a small length of space and that causes the tires to wear out. Like I said about competition, its good because the track is pre-lubricated lightly causing better performance on the track. Your tires won't wear out so soon if its slightly lubricated. Other than that, its mostly done to show-off.
