Default Windows doesn't recognize original memory

Hi, I just installed a new 1gb 266mhz DDR memory stick to the 2nd DIMM slot in my computer meeting all the specifications. But for some strange reason the original memory, 512mb 266mhz DDR, is no longer recognized by Windows or BIOS. I tried switching the two sticks but it had no effect. My computer manual states several times that it can be expanded up to *2 gb of 266mhz DDR. I then read somewhere that the BOOT.INI might have a set maximum memory, but in msconfig it was unchecked. I'm at a loss and I'd appreciate any help.

Windows XP SP2
L7VMM2 Motherboard (VIA KM266 Main Chipset)
120 gb HD
ATI Radeon 9800pro
*Two DIMM sockets, expandable up to 2 gb using 1 GB DDR SDRAM modules
