Domain name registration & Web hosting (what's the difference?)

Hi,

It's me again! the inquiring member loaded with questions:

1- What is registering a domain? Don't web-hosting sites give you your domain or subdomain name when they host your website? will it be necessary to register your domain name after it's hosted by a web-hosting company?

2- As an example, let's take "optinom" (a domain-names registration company) assuming that I don't have a website yet (actually, without assuming I don't have one yet), I go and register my own domain name at optinom domains, so what? What do I have now after I got my domain name registered? Will I get a storage space for hosting my website as I register my domain name at a domain-names registration company or I'll just get the NAME? Are registering a domain and hosting a website two separate independent processes?

3- Some domain registering sites say that after registering my domain, I will be able to use my own nameservers. What is "my own nameservers"? What can I use them for?
How bad is my knowledge?

I hope that I made myself clear.

2. choosing a domain adress sorta like a http address that people type to go to your site.
3. u can register first but in order to keep it for awhile you'll need pay and register.
4.server as maybe they are talking about ftp server.

Domain names are unique addresses (e.g. www.computerforum.com and there is no other same as this domain name). If you are thinking of a domain name for yourself (e.g. www.chem3.com) then you have to register and pay for it because if someone is also thinking of that domain name and he comes first to register for it then you might wait for a couple of years for that domain to become available again.

Web hosting is the real product of a web hosting company.From there, you are using their service by providing you some spaces from their servers. Sometimes,web hosts don't provide all the top-level-domain(the rightmost in the domain name... e.g. www.computerforum.com---- top-level is the .com). Sample of this is some .gov top-level-domain.

A really good place for domain names and hosting is Godaddy. I have both of my websites there and they have been good for me. A domain name usually runs around $10 or less a year and hosting depends on the size of storage, bandwidth, etc. I have the econo plan for both sites and that is $4 per month.

Unless I'm mistaken, you aren't answering his question. Tell me I'm wrong about what you are asking but here is my interpretation.
A domain is the URL that you enter such as www.computerforum.com. That is just the URL, nothing more. When you purchase webspace, you get information from the providor. You then go to where you purchased the domain, and enter certain required information. When you get webspace from a providor without a domain, you will have a URL something like www.chem3.<providor here>.com or something like that. You go to the domain, enter the information, that way it can pull the information from your webspace, and show it on your own domain name, www.chem3.com. I hope that makes sense.

A domain is the URL you type. Webspace is where you store the information. The domain pulls the information from the webspace to display.

a domain is the adress you type in yoiur adress bar. a hosting is where you store your files webpage and all of that. Some hosts will get you a domain for you(Which i suggest) and allot will give you a free sub-domain. They are seperate things, but many web hosts will get you your domain and transfer it and everything for you, which is easier.

I sort of uses godaddy, my host registered 2 domains for me with gododaddy so i dind;t do anything but pay for it.
