Computer Won't Turn Off

Hey everybody.
I have a little problem with my comp. WHen I go under the start menu to shut it down, and press shut down, it doesn't respond. I let it go, and about 5 min. later, it shuts down. What could be the problem? I have a feeling something happened when I installed my sound card. It said something about win32.dll error or sumthin.

Is the machine locked up or does it work like it normally would?

After I press shut down? If I press shut down, and then try to do something else, it gives that error. If I don't press shut down, everything else works as it should...I don't really understand the question.

I have an Audigy 2ZS. I dont know exactly what the message said. I'd have to check. Im out of town now though, so sorry bout that.

Hey guys.
I know this is an old post, but I didnt want to start a new one...Her is the exact error message that I got. I get this message when I press shut down, and then try to get into a program. At the top of the warning (or error) box (It is a big white X inside a red circle) it says "rundll32.exe-DLL Initialization Failed." And then in the main part of the box it says "The Application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down." Now, I dont know if that helps any, but thats what happens when I try to open a program after I have pressed the shut down button. I guess it's some kind of problem with rundll32.exe. So any help would be greatly appreciated. I shut down my computer every night, and it bugs me when it takes forever to shut down.

If you're shutting down your computer, why would you open a program? When you shut down your computer, it goes through a sequence of events before shutting down which includes closing any open tasks, starting with the processes started by the user, then local service processes,followed by network service processes, and finally system processes. So starting up a program while its closing processes won't work.

Thats exactly what im thinking, after you click shutdown -> OK, thats it. It's then shutting down, you cant open anything else. If you suddenly dont want it to shutdown then you can abort the shutdown by clicking start, RUN and typing shutdown /a. But only ifyour quick enough.

Anyway, im sure that what he's saying is just coming across wrong, below is my hint for a faster shutdown. It requires editing the registry so make sure you backup first.

Open up regedit (by clicking on START - RUN - type "regedit") and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then go to SYSTEM, then CURRENT CONTROL SET, then CONTROL. In the right hand pane there is an entry called WaitToKillService. Simply double click on this entry and change the value to 200.

The reason I tried opening a program was because it wasn't shutting down. I wanted to see if it was actually shutting down or not, so I tried opening a program. So when I got that message, it confirmed that it was still trying to shut down, but it was taking forever.

Do you have some kind of antivirus or some other security program firing up on shutdown?

Is there craploads of HDD activity? Could be the pagefile purging itself which can take some time
