Post Sound card messing up on the internet.

My sound card (soundblaster live 5.1) seems to be, well, very messed up. When a program such as iTunes is opened and a song is played, the music will speed up and slow down dramaticly over relativly short periods of time. This only happens though when I am on the internet ( a dial-up connection). I think it might be the IRQ lines. The operating system (XP) warns against changing the IRQ and all the books I have read seem to be lacking information in this field. I disabled the onboard sound but it still does not work correctly. I'm just not sure if that really is the problem and how to change the IRQ if it is. And just help fixing the sound card will be very much appreciated.
Tank you for your time.
