I have helped my friend to setup a router last week so that two computers could share the broadband connection. Today, my friend told me that both computers couldn't get on the Internet and obviously he asked me for help.

First of all, I checked the cable connection, the DSL cable was in WAN port, Computer 1 connected to L3 port, computer 2 connected to L4 port. OK, cable setup is correct.

Then I checked the Internet connection from the win xp, in computer 1, the Local Area Connection icon indicated something like "limited or without connectivity". This is the same in computer 2.

The router's default gateway is 192.168.0.1, so I tried to ping and see if it is ok. Both computers indicated Requested Time Out. So I switched off the router and both computers and did some changes. I connected the computer 1 to L1 port, and computer 2 to L2 port. (instead of L3 and L4 ports)

Then I started the router and computers again. I checked the Local Area Connection for both computers and they were ok.

Question: Why the connection is ok after I connected computer 1 to L1 port and computer 2 to L2 port?

Then, for computer 1, I could ping 192.168.0.1 and finished the router setting(i.e. it can get online)

However, for computer 2, I couldn't get to the router setting menu. I tried to ping 192.168.0.1 and it was ok. After a little testing, I found that after I disable the Norton Personal Firewall, I could get to the router setting menu. Then I finished the setting and the computer 2 could get online as well.

Question: Why I couldn't get to the router setting menu when the Norton Personal Firewall is enabled?

What kind of router is it? What settings did you adjust within the router?

The router model is D-LINK DI-604 4Ports Router.

I setup the router by using the Wizard. Internet is through PPPoE and dynamic IP so most settings are set by default (i.e. no need to enter data like specific ip address, etc).

Sounds like there have been software issues. Your limited connection was probably due to the firewall, you can still use it, but in the firewall, make sure your put in your routers adress, 192.168.0.1, as an authorized connection. On your router, you may not to go in manualy setup a few things, which may have been why you had problems with connections on the other ports. Make sure port 1 and 2, etc. are enabled.

The address 192.168.0.1 might have problems with your modem, often modems have that address. Disconnect the modem from the router, type in the address for the router, and there should be a place you can change the address. Change it to something like 192.168.1.1
