Default sound trouble in HL2

im running a set of Z-640s on my onboard sound, it works fine any other time, i have surround sound and all that, but i seem to lose my surround sound when i play HL2, my speakers will only work when i set it to 5.1 on the audio settings in HL2, but then it doesnt work in the game, sound plays fine out of my sub and speakers in front of me, but for example if someone is talking to me and my back is turned i cant hear them...any thoughts?

Default

well i took my 5.1 card out of my old machine...i noticed no difference between the two(onboard and card) so i kept the card in my old machine(crappy onboard)....but the surround sound works fine now in HL2 so i guess ill just keep the card in. *shrug* my guess it was driver related and i need to update drivers...but the dl is about 16meg..and im on dial up...and i dont have that kinda time right now
