Is it actually a soundcard, fitted through the PCI slots or is it just a bunch of sound jacks on the back of the motherboard??

have you tried scanning for new hardware thourgh the control panel have a look in device manger (Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.) Take a look to see if there are any devices wthout drivers installed (will show as yellow question marks)
