Default converting analog media>digtial media

hello all!

A friend of mine has an old analog video camera (yeah, like the Russian ones dell boy was selling in only fools and horses) but anyways, he asked if he can convert the analog footage he has so he can then burn to DVD.

Is this possible and if so what software do you need to achieve this?

any help is much appreciated.

regards
Mike
