Unhappy Problems connecting to internet with linux

This might be dumb question . I have loaded Suse Linux on my computer dual booting with Windows XP. I have entered all the information it asks for to log onto the internet but it still won't connect. Linux manuals say you can use a scandisk program to see if I'm running a soft modem (winmodem) but I am not. I don't know where to go from there to connect.

are you sure you are not using a winmodem? if it is a pci modem or usb modem, chances are its a winmodem. you will need to get an external serial modem. i can even recomend the TRENDnet TFM-560X modem.
