Default HELP with laptop

okay, my brother has an hp, pentium 3, windows xp home edtion laptop, not sure of the exact model but he is having a problem with it. whenever the computer boots up it goes to the login screen like everything is ok, but when you login and it loads the desktop it doesnt load any icons or start menu, the screen just has his wallpaper on it and nothing else. you are able to get into task manager, so i tried to find the control panel to do a system restore but couldnt find anything. you can also run programs through the task manager.

someone plz help
thanx

to get to system restore. do ctrl alt del and go to file new task. then type in
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and that should take you to system restore.

sounds like you lost some pretty important data. do you have your OS CD? Boot from that and try a recovery.
