Default Don't Know Which Cpu To Choose

I have a Sony Viao PCV-RX550. I don't remember the exact model number of the motherboard built in. I am trying to upgrade the cpu. I remember somewhere that the motherboard is only upgradeable to 2.6 GHz. It also has 400 FSB. I was wondering if I need any more info in choosing the CPU. Also if anyone knows a CPU i can buy and how to install it I would be very glad for the suggestions. Thank you.

Inorder to upgrade the cpu you will need to know what socket the mobo is...just go get everest here www.lavalys.com (home edition is free) and it will tell you what the model number is of your mobo under the motherboard tab

I got the lavalys program online. It says that the motherboard model is Asus P4B-LX. I also says that CPU Sockets/slots is 1. I don't really know if that is the right info. It also says that the intel chipset is Intel Brookside i845.

any of the s478 should work on that mobo, they go all the way upto 3.4ghz
Not sure if you bios will suport hyperthreading though, and i couldn't find any bios updates on asus web site.

Either way... what is your budget

I don't think a Prescott will work and they won't be 3.4GHz. The 845 series caps out at a 533MHz system bus with the 3.4GHz chips using an 800MHz bus.
