i believe the word is "why". because they were getting old, and new waves of processors were coming in. being old and not as good, people would stop buying them, so athlon stopped making them

Talking Hmmm

It's more complicated than that. They were produced for socket A. However, when there was more need for overall performance, a new socket type had to be brought in along with a new line of processors. For AMD this was socket 754 which then moved into socket 939 which added dual channel support. You may be aware of the fact that Semprons (based on the XPs) were introduced following the end of the production of the so called "XPs". Socket A, no matter how hard it tries, is simply a thing of the past (although can still provide sufficient performance).

P.S.: Business is the answer to this question as well. New processors + new components (mobos etc.) = more money for many.

I have an old socket "A" AMD computer sitting around here somewhere under i assume 2-4 inches of dust. anything, in my opinion, that fits in that kinna socket, should be out of production.

The first athlon XP was released in April 2001, that to me sounds a bit dated. Plus its single core doesnt really have support for new extensions and such, basically, its sdated and people arent buying them anymore. They will still be around on ebay for a while if you want to buy one.

*EDIT* Scrap that date, i looked at the wrong table, thats the date of when intel released thir 1.7Ghz P4, which was the major rival at the time to all AMD's.

I bought one...For moderate users who use their computers mostly for checking E-mail and the sort the XP series works just fine. Also, for budget gamers it works well, although the K8 series is only a little bit more expensive now for a comparable/better system. I'm gonna upgrade to K8 soon, but as far as I'm concerned the XP series still works excellently for most people.

Dual-cores haven't been out nearly long enough to say that single cores are insufficient. Additionally, what do you mean by "extentions and such"? That sentence makes no sense to me, please clarify.

The upgrade! My machine will soon be a 939 X2 4000+, 4x512 DDR400, and an 8600GTS.

It was? Last I checked, the 1.7Ghz P4 was no NorthwoodC....
