Default WinXP Won't install but SP2 will?

Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario 2700 laptop running WinXp. I format and re-install the os about every 6mo or less depending on when malware and glitches are a problem.

My problem has always been getting the computer to boot on the install cd. I have 3 different sets of factory WinXP install discs and 2 cd bays to use.

I once was able to do F10 on startup and select to boot on the cd drive but that isn't working anymore. I get the unable to read drive : abort/retry/fail? black screen.

I went out and bought WinXP SP2 and it installs fine but I don't like SP2 and want to stay with the earlier version.

Question:
What is that keeps my laptop from booting in the WinXP install disc and what do I have to do to correct it?

Thanks,
NewtonLoops

We'll I'm wondering why nobody is answering my question so I want to clarify just the question, perhaps I gave too much information.

Question:
My Compaq Presaio 2700 laptop running Windows XP won't boot off the installer cd? What do I have to do to correct that?

This has always been a problem but in the past I've been able to finally get it but I don't know how I did it. I have Win XP SP2 and it installs ok but the 'puter won't even boot up on the Win XP install disc. I get the unable to read drive : abort/retry/fail? black screen. I did F10 on startup to boot on the cd drive but that isn't working either.

Thanks,
NewtonLoops

This doesn'thave to do with your question, but if you take care of your PC you wont need to reformat so often.

Of course boot disk has everything to do with your question. Your having trouble getting your windows xp cd to run durring startup so it would seem that perhaps its not bootable, In which case you'd boot your computer with a boot floppy (aprox. six for windows XP) and you can instal windows.

Blue,
Thanks for the help but you are not reading my question. I'm reinstalling/reformatting because of malware and glitches. The 'puter boots fine.

look in the bios of your pc.. whats set as first boot device? anyway. set cdrom drive as first boot device, and HDD0 as second one. and ten try again to boot the Xp cd
i think that should do the trick
