Default DVD formatted as a CD

I have a DVD that needed to be emptied and Windows XP only has format CD option so I quick formatted the DVD as a CD. The problem is that now the DVD is only 684MB in size. I tried formatting it as a DVD later with Nero but it gave me an error after reaching the CD limit and I tried full formatting as a CD, which worked but didn't change anything. Is there a solution for this? or am I supposed to get a new DVD disc now and use that one as a CD that only works in DVD drives? :/

yeah I figured as much -_- I just don't like the fact that I lost a DVD-RW and gained a crappy CD-RW that needs a DVD drive and has 1x burning speed. was just curious about if this problem actually has some kind of solution, since I've never even heard of this type of thing happening to anyone.

What brand of media are you using? I had some problems kinda like that with some Sony RWs. It sux, but you'll just have to get a new disc.
