Windows has a huge software base. MacOS and Linux are less used and so have fewer malicious programs that attack them. Also Windows and MacOS are easier to use than Linux.

Linux is generally used by professionals as a stable OS for programming
Windows is a "family" OS Mac is, well.... its for people who like to be different

I have servers running kernel 2.4 that have been up twenty months...
Restarting a linux server is unecessary unless kernel changes have been made. I generally restart webservers every 120 days just to run disk checks. |

What's the difference? If anything, the additional services and constant load on a server would necessitate more maintenance. I wouldn't recommend Linux to everyone - it has an incredibly steep learning curve and most don't have the aptitude for it.
