Default No internet after reformat

Hi guy's, the saga continues... With some help from this board I finally got my wireless network up and running. The desktop component was beginning to slow to the point of total distraction, so I thought I'd reformat and reinstall windows.
I used the recovery discs which I made immediately after purchasing the machine. All went well until i tried to establish an internet connection. My new linksys modem(which I'd been using for a couple of weeks) would not allow me to connect. I can connect with my old alcatel modem but his is not compatable with my router. I cannot access the config page(http://192.168.1.1) to setup the modem, but I can access the page for the router(http://192.168.0.1)... When all is connected the modem front panel led's show Power, Ethernet and Dsl are OK. The Internet led does not illuminate though.

OK, so the summary of events is:
using internet via new linksys modem and netgear router, get the poo's 'cause the machine is responding like an old 286...

1. disconnect modem & router
2. reformat & reinstall Windows
3. turn off machine
4. reconnect modem & router
5. turn on modem, router and computer in the recomended sequence
6. use internet connection wizard to establish a connection
7. connection fails...
8. after several attempts, reconnect old modem
9. instantly connect to the internet, no problems

OK, so does anyone have any ideas??? Is it possible the modem bit the dust in the hour or so it was turned off while I reformatted??

Thanks in advance
Blue
