Default Operating System for New PC

I am going to build my first computer, I have a Dell now that had Win XP Home on it, and I upgraded to Windows XP Pro.

When starting out fresh, will another Windows XP Upgrade work, or will I have to first load win XP, then the upgrade to XP Pro sp2

Or do I need to buy a full blown version of Windows XP Pro?

You don't need to actually load the original version to upgrade - just have the original install cd available.

What if your actually not using both systems, in my business I have to have a back up ready to go, so my main pc now will become my back up. When I say back up, its in the corner not used, not the in the kids room etc.

If you bought a Dell, it is illegal for you to use that copy on any other pc - this stands for most OEM providers.

Edit: This is the case whether you actually use the PC or not.

Ok, how about some old versions of windows 98se, that I have disks for but pc's are in the PC grave yard somewhere. Can I use a new XP pro upgrad with one of these CD's. I just dont want to buy the full blown version when I have spent a small fortune on Windows software over the years.

it is illegal period to have the same OS serial on two computers. its one serial per computer. unless you uninstall xp from your other computer, its not LEGAL to have it on your other comp.

I agree, but if the Win 98 se software I have is no longer on a computer, I can use this and a NEW version of XP Pro Upgrade, isnt this corect.

The old computer that used to have Win 98 se was tossed in a dumpster years ago.
