Default Help with choosing a new external hard drive

I want to buy an External hard drive to go with my new laptop because it only has a measly 40gb to start with, but that will probably be reduced to 35gb or less with all the bloatware and stuff. i will put my music and photo collection onto the external hdd to save space on the internal one.

what will the external hard drive need to be in order to play mp3's?

whats the best connection that i would need? usb2.0, firewire or LAN.

what hard drive speed should i be looking? 5,400 or 7,200 or does it not really matter.

i've never used an external hdd so i dont even know if they work well with constantly playing mp3's. or is technology that good these days that they are exactly the same as internal hdd's.

cheers, any help would be very much appreciated.
