Default Windows restarts during start up?

I have a Windows XP 1.3 GHZ Compaq Presario, It will display the windows xp profectional logo, but just before the screen that you sign in with, it shows a blue screen then restarts by its self, any way to fix this with out reinstalling windows?

maybe XP installed the wrong divers? can you get into safe mode and check it out. compaq has a great website with a live tech support chat service you could try, though they would tell you to reinstall XP.

how did you install XP? was it after formating the HDD or did you upgrade the OS? upgrading my have caused some problems. killed my bro's HDD.

The blue screen disapears to fast to read it, The intstall of windows was good, it worked for three months then all of a sudden this happen...i really don't want to reinstall windows considering that there are files on the computer i need to save.
