Default making UTP cable

I heard that UTP only uses 4 of the eight wires in the cable.

Which 4 are those. ForI want to use my current telephonecable which is already there. It has 4 wires.

it does only use two pairs, 1, 2, 3, and 6 are the individual copper strands. it uses the orange and green colored pairs.
