Default Issue with Sony DVD/CD RW DRU-510A Drive

My Sony DVD/CD RW DRU-510A Drive started to malfunction recently. The data light on the drive would blink continuously starting at power up of the computer. This is a baffling problem, anyone have any suggestions?

Does it only do this when there's a disc in the drive? Did you install the drive yourself? Did anything happen right before this started occuring? Have you checked the connections? Have you air-dusted out the drive? (If it's an old drive, it's a good idea to air-dust it, but if it's fairly new, it's not that important, seeing as the dust wouldn't have had sufficient oppurtunity to collect. I once lost a drive to dust, and when it died it exhibited behaviour similar to your drive's current behaviour. That's the reason I'm asking that)

If you can think of anything else pertinent to the issue, let us know, but we need to know at least that much. Post back and let us know.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

The data light always blinks, doesn't matter if there is a disc in drive or not.

Yes I installed the drive myself a year ago and it was working perfectly fine.

No I have not air-dusted the drive, could you give me a link on a guide to air dusting it?

heh, just open the door, point the nozzle inside, and shoot short bursts in it. do it two or three times, as the remaining dust will settle each time.

these drives are supposed to be awesome! never heard of one goin south. . .
