Default Laptop advice

Let me first say hello to everyone. As you can see I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to get that out of the way.

So, Im going to be purchasing my first laptop. I was looking around on the Internet for prices (budget is limited) and specs and I found one that I think is pretty darn good but I want to see what some of you think.

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Notebook PC

AMD Turion™ 64 M-30 (1.6Ghz)
15.4" WXGA TFT display
Dual-layer DVD+/-R/RW
1GB of DDR333 memory
100GB hard drive
802.11g/b wireless

All for about $999.99 after rebate.

Now I really do not need the Dual-layer DVD+/-R/RW and I can probably live quite comfortable without 1GB of DDR333 memory and 100GB HD but if I can get them and the price is still relatively cheap... its all right with me. Im not going to be making movies or playing a massive amount of games on this.

I do need the laptop to be able to handle the basic stuff (you know, watching a DVD sometimes, Internet access (wired & wireless), play a game or two once in a while, etc. And I need a laptop that is going to stay with me for a while (maybe 2+ years) and be pretty portable.

So is the above laptop a good deal? All the customer reviews seem pretty positive, what do you think? Is Acer a good company? Do they make good products? How are the AMD Turion 64 processors? Good / Bad reviews? How did they do against other processors in benchmarks?

Any other laptops you might think I should check out?

Any advice is welcomed. Thanks for your help in advance.

yes acer is a pretty good brand. not really sure about how the amd turion 64 processors run. hardly see any of their benchmarks. that is pretty expensive for what you plan to do with it.

So, its not a deal?

Anyone have any other laptops I should check out that might be a better choice? If Im planning on keeping the laptop for a few years should I get one with a 64-bit processor or do you think it would be a waste?

since portability, speed, and not much gaming is at stake. heres a pretty good setup and a little bit cheaper than what you have. only 5.3 pounds and 1.29 inches thick. not bad at all for size with performance.

dell inspiron 600m
Pentium® M Processor 725(1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB) 14.1-in XGA
ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 64mb
512MB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
80GB Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
6-Cell Lithium Ion Battery (53Whr)
2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support
Free Dell Color Printer 720

TOTAL:$952.90

If its ur 1st laptop then do give enough importance to the dimension n wieght of the system. Most user try to by a laptop n end up buying a desktop replacement.
