Does it have to be USB?

Something like this might work better than a USB one - http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=11

I've just never used a USB wireless adapter so i'm not really sure how well the signal will be.

on top of all that, try to find out what chipset is in whatever wireless adapter you might have. certain chipsets are better at picking up signals than others. I had these belkin adapters which had a RALink chipset which was not so good at picking up a signal, but my laptop had an atheros card, and it could pick up my wireless router from the backyard!

the best bet would be to pick up the same card that your neighbors have for there router, that way there is no conflicts. (because i've had problems using different brands)

I can vouch for Atheros chipsets too...i got oen in my wireless card and it's excellent. But yah try to go with same brand, cuz' i use d-link cards and d-link router and that probably helps connection too.
