Lightbulb Help needed with a Diamond 1200 plus Scanner

I bought the scanner a few days ago and couldn't install it properly.I plug in the scanner, and the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. After it comes up, I install the scanner from the CD. But the following error message comes up after the wizard finishes -
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT . The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
Then there are two boxes, 'Close' and 'Ignore'. Clicking either of them does nothing.
I am running Windows XP, 116mb ram and 8gb HD. I have installed all the patches available for the scanner. I have already uninstalled it and updated it.
I'd appreciate anyones help, Will.

try using the drivers online, you can get them from the packard bell website here:

Done that, no change. It installs itself perfectly fine, but doesn't affect the scanner (it seems). In My Computer, I can click the scanner Icon and the microsoft Scanner wizard comes up - if I try to scan, it says an error occured while setting scanner preferences, if it is in use try again later.
One more thing - after downloading the driver, the error message I first talked aboud Didn't come up, maybe a good sign.

this is an extremely common problem, microsoft has provided a fix for it.

Default Thanks

Thank you but in the end I re-installed and it works - although sometimes it doesn't recognise the scanner it usually works fine
Thanks for the help, Will
