Default Doom3/ crash back to desktop

Probably an old issue already discussed inthere....but does anyone know why Doom3 keeps on crashing after a certain lap of time : no error message, just freeze and then back to desktop (it was nice to see u play, bye and that's it !) ? And how could I have fix this ? The ID D3 patch is already installed...doesn't seem to help very much !

I've had Doom 3 for over a year and beat it many times on 2 different computers, but I've never had that happen to me. What are your system specs??

Well, the CP is a Pentium IV 2.40GHz with 512 Mo RAM. The Video card is a 128 DDR ATI RADEON 9800. Normally far enough to play the game but... I really can't fugure what's going on : sometimes I can play for more than an hour without any trouble adn sometimes after just 5 min, the whole systme crashes... desktop, here I am !
