Default Doesn't Pick Up Internet

When I got my new PC, I tried to hookup my existing broadband connection to it, so I plugged in the ethernet cable and went into network connections to connect it, I can't connect. It reads the LAN signals, but it won't let me connect to the internet. I set it up just like on my old PC (which I'm using now) and it still doesn't work. What could be wrong????

Check to see if it is picking up an ip address
type this in command prompt
ipconfig /all

eh, how are you connecting to the web, are you using a router?
You shouldn't be setting the ip address at all, most likely you will just let the dchp set it.

Answer the following
a) How are you connecting to the web
b) What does it say when you run the ipconfig /all command

Ok, I'm just trying to plug in the Ethernet cable from my broadband modem to my ethernet port in my mobo. When I get the connection up it says it is "connected" in network connections, but I get no internet, saying I am not connected. When I type in ipconfig /all I get a IP Adress for my ethernet port that has a bunch of letters and numbers, not a real IP adress like, say, 11.222.333.444

I have no idea why it is not reading my connection.

Also check the ip/tcp settings of your connection and ensure that your obtaining the ip addy from the dchp

The modem isn't a usb modem is it? Can you get to the admin pages of the modem?
