Question LCD wont display widescreen image

I just purchased a Toshiba 23HLV84 (a 23 inch lcd hdtv monitor), it has a RGB input and i intended to use this as both my computer monitor as well as my televison in my room. I was able to get it to work as a monitor but it only will display the image as a standard 4:3 image with black bars on the sides. I have attempted many different resolutions such as the supposed max resolution of 1600x1200 and the native resolution of 1366x786 and nothing seems to fill the screen. It works and looks best at 1024x768 but as mentioned is a 4:3 image with black bars on the sides. If anyone has any info about this it would be greatly appriciated as i will return the monitor if it is not able to display a 16:9 image from my computer. I am using a Nvida GeForce FX 5500 and runing windows xp.
