I have a cheap $13 wireless card from Fry's electronics. If I were to buy a more expensive one, the ones advertised for 8x range and speed or something like that, what would it do? Would I be able to pick up signals better or reach out farther to get signals? I would like to know what the more expensive wireless cards do.

Well, your cheaper one is probably only 11mbps(802.11b) where as the more expensive ones are probably 54mbps(802.11g) You won't notice a difference unless your networking. Surfing the net will be the same on either.
Otherwise, one might have more range... it's hard to tell, but I suspect the main difference is the speed...

You'll probably only notice a difference in speed. It should pick up the signal at pretty much the same distance, though.

well the 802.11g has a farther range then the 802.11b, but in terms of speed at say 50 feet, you wont notice a difference.

No, mine is 54 mps and 802.11g. But haven't you seen the ads in the paper for the d-link or netgear wireless cards with like 8x speed and range? Like here it says it has up to 8x the range of the normal 802.11g wireless cards. Does it and how does it work?
