crazy temps after case mods

alright so i punched a hole in my case ot add an 80 mm exhaust fan

I put it in the very top cause my case was getting around 40 at idle and 45 under load with ambient temps around 70f

I have a 478 prescott 3.0

you knew that was coming

anyway before the mods the cpu would idle around 45

now after the case mods im idling a 53 but the case is now down to abotu 35

so wtf

did i bump somethign when i was cutting?

its the stock heatsink and i didnt use any thermal paste
but ive never had a problem till now

when im under load i am hitting 70c which i have set to shut off at

damn man, thts high. It is possible that you knocked the heatcink, if one of the clips on the scoket retention module came out then it wont be on tight and wont be cooling much, so do check that the heatsink is all ok. Also check your 3 pin cable going from the fan to the mobo. Just unplug it andf plug back in again. reset the BIOS incase thats screwing with the temop reporting for some reason, check all cables for restricted air flow, and check that nothing is topping the CPU fan from spinning.

alright im gonna just unhook the heat sink and put it back on well see if that fixes it

i havent reset the bios yet cause i dont wanan piss with the settigns again

but its still happening

I have 6 intake fans and 2 exhaust fans plus 1 in the power supply

i unplugged 4 of the intake fans cause they arent really effecttive anyway
the case temps are idling right now at 33c and the cpu is at 49 c

i just have IE open

i took the heatsink out and then put it back on

is it possible the vigbration from the drill f d something up?

can anyone recommend a good heatsink for a p4 478 prescott

wait, you drilled through a metal case when the components were still in there.....!!!

yea
in high and sight that was dumb

but it was a part of the case that nothing else was near and i set up cardboard behind it to catch debris

the case was on its side and i drilled in the top of it

argg that was dumb

i can hear something inside that sdounds like its accelerating then bogging down and then accellerating and bogging down

maybe the heat sink fan is burning out?

there isnt much of a problem there

if you dont hit anything with the drill, youll be fine. anyway,.. make shure the fans arnt placed complete at random.. make them blow a stream of cold air blow through he case.

I hear that if you take the heatsink off, and then put it on again, the thermal paste can get air in it, and not conduct properly... or did you say you were not using paste?

Eitehr way, try applying something like Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste (you'll need to wipe the old paste off if there is any).

Read carefully the application instructions if you're going to do this, and also ask a few others in here if they thinks its worth doing. Its only about £7, and worth it if it brings those temps down by increasing conductivity from the CPU core to the heatsink.

im going to order some paste and a better heatsink today to see what i can come up with on that
