Default how to change CPU??

hi.. i bought DIY computer for the past 2 1/2 yrs.. i planning to change my cpu to a better speed.. i got a p4 1.7GHz CPU now.. but i not sure wheather my mother board is compatible with the advanced CPU like the 3.0GHz CPU or below etc.. in my mind, at least i can get a 2.4 GHz CPU.. if can upgrade, what should i say to the shopkeeper to buy the selected CPU? also, i saw some kinda CPU like p4 2.40E GHz all these stuff.. theres extra alphabet behind the numbers.. and what are they? better version? so i have 2 questions.. thx.. my mother board specs for CPU is as detailed below..:

CPU: mPGA478 CPU socket
This motherboard uses the INtel 845 Chipset. It is a multifunction chipset for higher-end performance and mainstream systems. The components of the Intel 845 Chipset includes the following devices mounted on the board.
-82845 Memory controller HUB (MCH)
-82801BA I/O Controller Hub (ICH2)
This mother board supports all 478-pin Pentium 4 processor on the board.

All of these information i took from the manual book.. i only take the important specs.. if u need anymore specs, pls ask.. thx for viewing.. i hope u answer to my question..
