Default Problems with memory and and external hard drive

Hi guys! Im a newb (first post). Be gentle.

Ive got a problem and would love some help. Im not cpu illiterate but im farrr from a seasoned pro.

I have a 19GB hard drive that i recently ran out of space on. So, i bought an external hard drive, 60 GB add-on. I have 768 of RAM so i dont think theres a problem with my memory. Since my original C drive ran out of space, ive been unable to defrag or download much of anything.

Forgive me, this may sound dumb but i dont know why i cant download anything and am having problems defragging. It says i need to have so much space free for it to properly work. Does the external hard drive not work in conjunction with my regular C drive? Ive cleaned all my temp files too. This is very frustrating. Argh!

If someone would be so king to enlighten me, i would forever be in their debt. Thanks in advance to anyone who'll help.

both of them are two seperate drives.. a C and D.. so it wouldn't be considered one.. thats probabl why you are not able to defrag it.. you said you have 19GB.. how much space do you have left over? you will need a certain amount of space.. depending on your hard drive.. i recommend trying to atleast have 100mb of free space.. maybe more..

so you can just copy some files and paste it over to the external hard drive.. files like your documents.. pictures.. movies.. etc..

I have another question. When i go in My Computer it shows i only have 856 MB out of 55 GB on the external hard drive. This is crazy. All i have on it is 5 backed up dvds. I just got it too. Is there a problem anyone thinks i should be aware of?
