if you're interested in only headphones i've heard that something as cheap as the av 710 is better in performance than any sound blaster card, x-fi included. (assuming you're listening to music only.. sound blasters are definitely better for any music or games) i don't see how, but headphone audiophile i've heard from who uses their computer-as-source swear by this.

the av 710 is only $25 at newegg. (it was, i can't find it now)

one of the best options, though, is the emu 0404. i think it's around $100, and it's supposed to be fantastic ..

just letting you guys know that as much to my surprise as probably your's, even the x-fi doesn't compare to the cards listed above. although i can't tell you from experience, everyone i've ever talked to about it agrees upon it.

again, this is assuming you're only listening to music. movies/games are a different story.
