Default New memory in place but not being registered by PC

Hey all,

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with 2.6Ghz processor and 768 (256x3) of Ram, running windows XP.

Now I've needed to upgrade the memory to 1GB as I'm running some memory hungry programs e.g. photoshop, illustrator, Flash Studio etc.

Purchased 1x1 GB memory module from a retailer on ebay with the following spec: 1GB DDR SDRAM 400MHz, PC3200, 2.5V, Non-Parity, Non-ECC, 184-pin, Cas Latency 2.5.

In theory it should work no problems with my system. However what I've noticed is that when I removed all other memory and just had the new 1GB ram installed (DIMM1) the computer made some weired beeping noise and didn't get to the bios screen. The assumption being it could find no memory.

So as a temporary measure I have put 2 x 256k of my old memory back into Dimm4 and 3 in addition to the 1GB in Dimm1. It works insofar as it recognises the 2 x 256k but the 1GB of ram is completely ignored.

any suggestions? I hope the memory isn't kaput...maybe I need to get a matching 1gb in order for it to work?

Suggestions welcomed
