Default Modem using usb instead of ethernet

I bought a router for the computer in my living room and a wireless reciever for another computer. Shortly after opening the package i realized I did not have all of what I needed. The router required an ethernet connection from the modem, then an ethernet connection back to the main computer. So I bought an ethernet pci adapter, installed it and it seems to work, but it says a network cable is unplugged when I use the ethernet hookup on my modem. (I need to get internet access from the ethernet hookup before I can install the router). I think this is because my modem is ignoring the ethernet hookup. How can I change my modem to use the ethernet hookup instead of the usb? If it helps the model is Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem. Or is the problem with something else?
