Default External hard drive failure (PLEASE HELP)

In my photography studio I have a Seagate external 120 gig hard disk.
The other day I was messing around with connecting it to a Linsys network drive device.
Now the drive has quit working. I can go to my computer, and it shows the drive as drive H: but when I try to open it it just asks if i want to format the drive (which of course i do not).
For some reason the drive has become non readable, which is very bad, as I have thousands of picture, amoung other things on it.
Has anyone ever had this problem?
Does anyone know what I can do to make the drive work again?
Or does anyone know of a software program that will fix it?
Thanks
GAVIN
