Default ram compatibility

hello

i just finished my first build and cant figure out why xp home wont install; it freezes @ the EULA-end user liscence agreement. this is a legit cd and i have a pro upgrade version to load after this. but anywho,my RAM is not on the 'supported vendor list'. in the bios it says there is 2gigs (which is correct) but durring POST there is 256mb. is this a mobo issue, ram issue, or am i doing something wrong? [I've also tried rearranging the ram... same results]

my hardware:
4200+ x2
asus k8n sli premium
patriot low latency ram (2 gigs)
6800gt leadtek
audigy 2 zs gamers ed.
seasonic 600w sli psu
nec dvd/cd drive
toshiba fdd
wd 200gb 3gb/s hdd

any advice welcome!
