Default StartUp Programs

Hey everybody,
I'm running windows 2000 on a Dell desktop. I need to know, what would be the effects if I prevented all startup programs from starting up with my computer? My computer's been acting very strange lately, shutting off in the middle of usage, and recently when it does that, the screen turns blue and an error message shows; something about clearing the cache. Please help me, I'm hoping it would run better if I stopped all programs from running at startup.

hmm, it sounds like it's infected by a worm..

I had that befor on my Dell with XP, and I installed a patch from microsoft, and it solved the problem.
