Default IDE and SATA problems

ok i have a 80g SATA and a 40g IDE harddrive. I want to use the 40g to install windows on and i want to use the 80g for storage. When i boot up to the SATA hdd i can see the 40g IDE. But when i boot up to the 40g i cant see the 80g as a secondary drive. any clues on how to fix this

maybe it needs to be enabled in the bios. could jumper settings have anything to do with it?

I cant enable it in my BIOS because BIOS has never recognized my SATA drive even when it was my only hard drive and it worked properly it recognizes it after the tests memory and searching for any storage devices then it goes to another screen and finds the drive. Ive tried to do it in BIOS but it just wont recognize it. Also i have tried jumper settings and it still wont work. Theres no jumper settings for SATA to make it master or slave either they are all different type of settings.

Do you have different operating systems on both drives?

If you want to use an IDE and a SATA drive, you must use the SATA for the primary drive. You will need to load the raid drivers for it. insert the win cd, and press f6 when promted... Then if the IDE drive is not working properly, you will need to use an IDE to SATA converter.. Some IDE drives will need to be converted to the SATA connection...
