Angry printer installation problems

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to install a printer onto the computer, but the installation crashed midway and was a failure. Now, I have a different printer, and whenever I try to install it, I get an error message saying an installation is already in progress and has to be finished before installing a new device. I've tried using the Add/Remove Hardware of the Control Panel, I've tried installation from the Install New Printer prompt, and everything else, but nothing works. And I don't see any installation of the old printer software going on despite the error message that something is being installed. There are no printer drivers loaded on the PC, and I can't install any because of this error message. How can I get rid of this error?
