HD DVD VS Blu Ray My take

My take: DVD isn't going anywhere and both Formats will go the way of Beta.

I don't think people want to have to put new drives in their computers, I don't think anybody wants to get a new DVD player unless they're a technophile.

Now if I had to pick one it would be HD DVD since it's cheaper to produce and at one point in development could hold as much as a BD DVD

Blu Ray will just be too expensive to produce. since it needs new equipment.

That's my Take what's yours?

i duno matter about when they come out who has the largest capacity and the fastes write times and is more damage proof my pick is for blue ray since i think cds are useless and dvd r sure they can hold lots of data but u have to look after the discs blue ray discs are gona be contaned liek a floppy disc and probley be more durable

I've actually been convinced of Blu-Ray's survival, and of HD-DVD goin' the way of Beta (I originally believed that HD-DVD was the way to go). The protective layer required for the discs may be expensive (5 USD on a current DVD disc), but once it becomes more widespread the cost will plummet, plus it's real tough. Due to how close the data sits to the surface on Blu-Ray discs even a minor scratch can be fatal. To prove the protective quality of this coating they (don't ask me who "they" are, I can't remember) took a screwdriver and carved into the bottom of the disc "THIS DISC WORKS", then put it in a Blu-Ray drive, and it could actually read the data!

Blu-ray also has under development a disc with 8 layers. At 25 gigs per layer, that is certainly nothing to scoff at. Not to mention that Blu-Ray has a transfer rate of 36 mbps (actually, HD-DVD has the same transfer rate, I just thought it was really cool, and worthy of mention).

Despite the initially higher cost I believe that Blu-Ray will prevail. We certainly won't be sticking to regular ol' DVD much longer no matter which medium becomes the standard (or if both survive).

The thing with HD-DVD is that manufacturers wont have to buy completely new equipment to make them, they will just need a few upgrades. So HD-DVD will be much cheaper for companies to produce, and most movie companies are going with HD-DVD since it has better DRM management. Although Blu-Ray has a larger disc capacity.

HD-DVD since it will, thanks to INTL/MSFT, have a lot more flexibility as far as behind the scenes development goes

Blu-Ray may eventually take over the consumer electronics sector but as long as they stay away from Data storage, ive got no issues against it.
