I think you need to put them in a folder other than the My Computer folder, like make a folder in C that says "stuff from desktop" or whatever you like and put the stuff you don't want in there. The My Computer folder isn't really a folder on the computer, actually the only thing that sometimes parents it is the desktop, though in reality it should me in like C:/Documents and Settings/'your username'/Desktop. That folder is also a good place to delete things you no longer want on the desktop, deleting them straight from the desktop should work too, but I think you had problems with this if I remember correctly
