they are what they are. They mass produce large volumes of equipment and sell cheap due to economies of scale. They can't stack against other more powerful machines, but as for bang for buck they are better than the average consumer could build.

It depends what you're gonna be using your PC for. A gaming computer at Dell (I'm thinking XPS) will cost you much more than if you built it yourself. 2x 7800GTXs in SLI in a Dell pc will cost you twice what it would in DIY. But appart from high-end computers, Dell has very good prices that include most of the time a monitor. Gaming comp? DIY. Everyday surfing, chatting, e-mails etc... DELL. If an old person asked me what kind of computer (s)he should get, I would definitely recommend a Dell, unless (s)he plays BF2, HL2, Doom 3, etc... Which I highly doubt

I have a dell and I have no problem with it. I dont play games on it (not top of the lines) Once I build my computer I dont think I will ever get a dell unless its for something like office computer. They are good for work not that good for play.

a lot of people are like me, they wouldnt have a dell if it was given to them, but there are other people who like the, their family desktops (dimensions etc) arent meant to be that good (i had a very bad experience with one), but their laptops and gaming desktops are meant to be okay....

i have one of their laptops and it's nice. No complaintes at all about it and it is very upgradeable for a laptop.
I use their desktops at school and they are Tip top. I think the difference is in the different systems. The cheap bargain systems are exactly that. Cheap. The high end systems are much better as they use higher end parts. The only thing that sucks with them as desktops is that they multiplier lock the BIOS, so ocer's are out of luck. Their warentee is good tho. Minimum warentee you can get is one year and if you complain enough they will fix just about anything. Not just ship you the new part but send someone out to install it, or just ship you a whole new system. So for 90% of the world computer users, it's a great deal. However i had to call to order a bluetooth card and it took me 20 min to get someone i could understand and another 5 minutes to talk the price down.

Dells are good. I would not own one myself but that is because I'll always build mine. If you want a powerful gaming PC then Dell XPS are good for that purpose but then again so are many others.
