Exclamation Icons Disappeared

Hi, a family friend is complaining about "HER ICONS HAVE DISSAPEARED", thats all the info ive got, other than shes running windows XP Pro.

Im going over there in a few hours to sort it out, im thinking that she has in-advertantly clicked on HIDE DEESKTOP ITEMS, and not realised. If there is no start bar either then im guessing that EXPLORER.exe isnt starting up properly or somethings stopping it, thus boot into safemode and checkout whats going on there.

Is there anything you guys can say that will add to my battle plan, thats all ive got really, those two things, any other ideas about what might be wrong. Just to clarify, this happens everytime she turns the comp on, so im gathering boot.ini files and most system files are still intact.

She does have AV and PF software on but she never updates so its pretty useless.

Might help to prevent this if she's having stability/corrupt problems within the OS : http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1153/

A system restore will probably bring it all back up to speed, if she's got a pretty recent restore point you can do it from XP.

But what you said sounds right. If the taskbar is gone it's probably explorer.exe not starting correctly. Safe Mode and recovery should do the trick.
