Weird Boot Up Problem

Hello all, I have a strange boot up problem. After the bios goes through, I get a black screen hang up for about 2-5 minutes then the window xp symbol shows up to the desktop. What is causing this delay? By the way, this is on a new computer and a old monitor. Is it possible that my old monitor doesn't have good compatability on my new system? Any feedback would be appreciated.
