Default downloading MS updates

i am working on an older comp. that had 98SE, it wouldn't let me download MS updates, i re-installed the upgrade to ME and still same problem. error message says something like..."error encountered while scanning for updates" the help links didnt do much good. i did read somewhere that MS is able to detect bootleg or multiple drives w/ same o.s. cd., if this is true, i guess when you try scanning for latest updates is prob. when they would catch it. i was given both the 98 and ME cd's,(that was installed on the comp.) and i dont think they have been loaded on another machine. what reason's could be for this error message? i've worked on many comp. and haven't seen this before....thanks for any help!!! paul

This sounds like some type of firewall is blocking you from updating the updates from MS. Are you able to post a screenshot of the error message?
