Default eject device

I just recently bought a Creative Zen Nano Mp3 player. I was reading the booklet and it said that before I remove the device from the the pc i needed to right-click the usb drive and click "eject". Then wait 5 seconds after the little graphic on the Mp3 player went away. It said that if this was not done it could damage the device and it might not function correctly. Only the graphic does not go away. I have disconnected the device with the graphic still showing(after clicking the eject button) several times now and have seen no problems with the device. Is this something I should be concerned with?

*this is on a machine running windows 98se
