Default Screen capture as video?

I can use photo deitor software to capture an area of the monitor display as a graphics file. I'd like to be able to capture an area of the screen as video so I can demonstrate tasks in a presentation.
Can anyone advise a FREE application that can do this? I suppose image quality is not crucial. Thanks guys.
